TZ3 in Production

August 2020

Tropic Zine Issue 3 is a response to the isolation and alienation of our time; as a publication rooted in connection and collaboration, 2020 was the year to turn away from social media, toxic relationality, and virtual clutter, and look for our own abundance. TZ3 consisted of a monthlong residency at Aupuni Space for a small group of artists who developed their own practices in relation to the space and each other. It was an experiment in sustained processing, reacting, digesting, composing, and mobilizing.

We see our place as networked beings and part of a rhizomatic model of relations in order to understand the roots of oppressive systems of power and control. And as a publication rooted in connection and collaboration, this is an appropriate time to turn away from social media, toxic relationality, and virtual clutter, and look for our own abundance. It is an experiment in sustained processing, reacting, digesting, composing, and mobilizing.

The gallery space was divided into three modes of production. Firstly, a corner for research-driven practices will include a reference library, scanner, copier, and surface for reading and writing. A “messy” area will include all painting, signmaking, papermaking, and sculptural work. Lastly, the space was transformed when necessary into a workable performance space for projections, photoshoots, broadcasting, performance.
