Disembodied spirits, a.k.a. ghosts; haunting perturbations of the mind that are often harbingers of unpleasant or dreadful events.
As I work with these materials that wash up on our shores from other places and other lives, I wonder about the origins and journeys of these objects and the havoc they have wreaked upon the ecosystems and inhabitants of our oceans and coastal communities. This installation is an encapsulation of how I feel being faced with the overwhelming amount of a singular object--oyster spacers collected by Sustainable Coastlines Hawai’i volunteers--and the fear that the very near future is one where our beaches and waterways are literally suffocated with plastic waste. Simultaneously, I have grown extremely fond of these objects and find a beauty in these materials that is unsettling.
